Chapter 13

Fresh Perspective

On the drive over to the hospital, Fynn asked, “So, how’s the investigation going?”

I huffed out a sigh of frustration. “You mean, considering that there’s apparently a whole bunch of stuff going on that we didn’t know about?” I mimicked Tam’s condescending tone. “I can’t believe y’all didn’t know any of this!”

“It was disturbing information, to be sure,” Fynn said mildly.

“And he didn’t think it was important for me know this? He’s such a dick.” And I hated myself for feeling attracted to his scent, his looks, and to the occasional flashes of an interesting person I glimpsed in between his attempts to annoy me.

“I thought you were interested in him.”

Crap. My dad must have noticed me looking at Tam when I thought Tam wouldn’t notice.

I turned in my seat and gave Fynn my frostiest look. “You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s not only a dick, he’s a condescending dick.” I crossed my arms. “Besides, I’m dating Claudio.”

Fynn’s brows shot up at my declaration. Then he sighed. He didn’t say anything for a minute or two. I sensed the wheels turning inside his head.

Finally, he said, “I agree that Tam is making parts of your investigation more difficult than it needs to be. But we spent quite a bit of time talking while you were out of the house yesterday, and I feel like maybe I’ve gained a bit of insight into his character.”

Fynn was good with people. Everyone liked him, and his students adored him. I waited to hear what he thought of Tam.

“He actually seems like a smart, decent, and fundamentally kind young man,” my dad continued. “His greatest concern—other than finding acceptance among the members of the Mesa de Fuego colony—is the welfare of that missing egg and the baby dragon inside.”

I snorted. “Right.”

“Look, Izzy,” Fynn said. “I’m not trying to tell you that you’re wrong about the way that Tam, ah, reacted to the gaps in our knowledge about dragons and hybrids. I’m just asking you to consider the possibility that his scars run deeper than just the ones marking his skin.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“It means that he may be envious of your life here in Yerba Buena, free of obligations to dragons or vampires.”

I didn’t reply. But my dad’s words made me reconsider all of my interactions with my frustrating client so far.

I’d been assuming that Tam viewed me with pity, thinking me hopelessly ignorant about the most basic facts of hybrid life.

Could Fynn really be right that Tam was actually jealous that I was living a human life in a human city instead of having been sold off to vampires?

“Hi, Dr. Drake, Izzy. It’s really nice to see you,” Claudio rasped from his hospital bed. “Thanks for coming to visit me.”

“I wanted to wish you a speedy recovery in person,” Fynn said, smiling.

He placed an insulated takeout container of hot & sour soup on Claudio’s nightstand.

Claudio let out a moan of happiness. “Real food! At last. Thank
